About The Nation of Cards

Hamilton Waterfront by Derek Purdy

It’s a little like hearing a sickening cracking sound while you’re standing in the middle of an ice covered pond.

In one moment you are both stunned by your vulnerability and paralyzed by your lack of information. Stay put and wait for help or get out of there? Move slowly or sprint? Which way to go?

Many of us felt the same way when the scope of the Crisis of 2008 became apparent. Assurances of stability evaporated, sometimes literally overnight. The rules of the game – risk and opportunity, guarantees and capitalization – were no longer constant or even consistently applied. Pronouncements of the “wise men” of the financial and political class were regularly rendered invalid.

Standing in the middle of that economic ice, I decided that I could either quickly study the situation and start taking intelligent action or listen to the “experts” on the shore and stay put while the fissures expand and my options disappear.

I’m using this blog as a traditional “web log.” It’s a place to record my observations, reflect on the results, and engage with others around the situation.

I claim no special expertise or knowledge, only a desire to gather the facts, thoughtfully analyze them, and identify the right things to do.

I’m feeling pretty vulnerable in the middle of this ice. Every time I start to make a move, another fissure erupts. How about you? Let’s work together to find our way out of this…
